About the Brand
Waterstones, founded in 1982 by Tim Waterstone, is Britain’s largest dedicated high-street bookseller, with over 280 shops across the UK. Now part of Elliott Advisors — the US investment firm that also owns Barnes & Noble — the company is headquartered in London and serves millions of readers each year.
The website stocks far more than just the latest bestsellers. You’ll find fiction and non-fiction for adults and children, signed and special editions, board games, stationery, and gifts. Price points range from £5 paperback deals to premium box sets. Most items can be ordered for home delivery or reserved for free click and collect from your local branch. Pre-ordering an upcoming title locks in a price promise: you’ll always pay the lower of the price on the day you ordered or the day it’s dispatched.
A few features make Waterstones stand out from online-only retailers:
- The Waterstones Plus loyalty scheme — earn a stamp for every £10 you spend, and after 10 stamps you get £10 credit. Students can sign up for Plus Student, which adds a permanent 5% discount on everything.
- Free click and collect to any shop, typically ready within hours.
- Regular in-store author events, book signings and reading groups, plus the popular “Books of the Month” staff picks.
- The Waterstones app, where you can browse, build wish lists, check store stock and manage your Plus account. [IMAGE: Waterstones Plus card and app on a smartphone]

How to use
Shopping Guide
When’s the best time to shop at Waterstones?
Waterstones runs decent discounts all year round — we see up to 50% off RRP on selected lines almost permanently. But the biggest savings usually cluster around Black Friday, the January sales, and the summer reading promotions when you’ll find deeper cuts on new releases and box sets. Pre-ordering ahead of a book’s publication date is another smart move; Waterstones’ price promise means you’ll pay whichever is lower between the order price and the dispatch price, so you can lock in a good deal early.
How do I combine offers to spend as little as possible?
Start by picking a deal from the list above — say, 20% off bestsellers. Then make sure your basket hits £25 to trigger free delivery. If you’re a student, verify with UNiDAYs and apply that 10% code on top of the existing discount; you’ll still earn a Plus stamp for every £10 you spend, edging you closer to a £10 reward. The one rule to remember: you can’t use both the student discount and the Plus Student 5% automatic reduction at the same time, so go with the 10% code if you’re eligible.
Should I buy signed editions, or stick with standard copies?
Signed editions cost more but often hold their value for collectors, and Waterstones sometimes pairs them with exclusive bookplates or bonus content you won’t find elsewhere. If you’re buying a gift, a signed copy adds a personal touch without much extra effort. For everyday reading, it’s probably not worth the premium. Keep an eye out for signed editions that get caught up in sitewide sales — that’s when the price gap shrinks.
Waterstones vs Amazon — where will I get a better price?
| Factor | Waterstones | Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| Regular book prices | RRP with frequent %-off deals | Often discounted below RRP as standard |
| Delivery | Free over £25, click & collect free | Free next-day with Prime, otherwise £2.99+ |
| Extras | Loyalty stamps, signed editions, in-store events | Kindle deals, Audible bundles, unlimited selection |
| Student discount | 10% via UNiDAYs | 10% off textbooks via Student Prime |
If you value the physical browsing experience, signed copies and earning loyalty credit, Waterstones can work out cheaper when deals stack. If speed and absolute lowest list price matter more, Amazon often edges ahead — but you’ll miss out on the stamp rewards.
What catches people out with Waterstones deals?
Free delivery needs a £25 minimum spend, so a basket that dips below that after a discount can still attract the £2.75 charge. Click and collect is free but you’ve got five days to pick up before the order is returned. The price promise only applies between order and dispatch — once it’s shipped, a later price drop won’t get you a refund. And a handful of heavily discounted titles are online exclusives you won’t find in a shop.
