About the Brand
Apple Music is a premium streaming platform launched by Apple Inc. in 2015, operating out of the tech giant’s Cupertino headquarters. It gives subscribers access to a sprawling catalogue of over 100 million tracks, positioning itself as a major player in the UK’s audio streaming market alongside rivals like Spotify. We find it particularly appeals to those already deep in the Apple ecosystem, though it works perfectly well on Android and web browsers too.
The service revolves around three main subscription tiers. An Individual plan costs £10.99 a month, while the Family option covers up to six people for £16.99. Students get a heavily discounted rate of £5.99, which uniquely bundles in free access to Apple TV+. There are no ads interrupting your listening, and you can cancel or switch plans whenever you like without being locked into lengthy contracts.
What really sets the platform apart is the audio quality and supplementary apps. Every subscriber gets Lossless Audio and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos at no extra cost, delivering studio-grade sound if you have the right headphones. There is also a dedicated Apple Music Classical app included in the price, offering the world’s largest classical catalogue with specialised search tools for composers and conductors.
These built-in perks, combined with the occasional promotional offer we track below, make it a compelling choice for audiophiles and casual listeners alike.
How to use
Shopping Guide
Is the Apple One bundle actually cheaper than paying for Music separately? If you already pay for iCloud+ storage or use Apple Arcade, bundling them together makes financial sense. We tracked the pricing and found that the standard Apple One tier costs £16.99 a month, which includes the Individual Music plan, TV+, Arcade, and 200GB of iCloud storage. Buying those four services separately would set you back over £30, effectively giving you the extra apps for free if you were already planning to subscribe to Music anyway.
What happens to my downloaded offline tracks if I cancel my subscription? Unlike purchasing MP3s from the old iTunes Store, streaming downloads are essentially rented rather than owned. The moment your monthly billing cycle ends and your subscription lapses, the DRM protection kicks in and those offline files become unplayable on your devices. We always recommend exporting your playlists to a third-party transfer service before cancelling, just in case you decide to switch to a rival platform and want to rebuild your library quickly.
How does the audio quality compare to Spotify Premium? Apple has a distinct edge here because it includes Lossless Audio and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos at no extra cost, whereas Spotify still hasn’t rolled out its promised HiFi tier. If you own a decent pair of wired headphones or compatible wireless earbuds, the difference in soundstage and instrumental separation is immediately noticeable. Just bear in mind that streaming in maximum Lossless burns through mobile data rapidly, so it is best reserved for Wi-Fi listening at home.
Can I share my Family plan with friends who don’t live with me? Apple’s terms strictly require Family Sharing members to reside in the same household, and the platform occasionally audits location data to enforce this. While it might be tempting to split the £16.99 fee with university mates living in different cities, doing so risks the organiser’s account being flagged or restricted. It is much safer to stick to actual relatives or housemates to avoid losing access to your shared libraries and playlists.
