About the Brand
Headquartered in Birmingham, National Express has been a staple of British transport since the early 1970s. Now part of the wider Mobico Group, it operates the UK’s largest coach network, connecting hundreds of towns, cities, and major airports. Millions of passengers rely on their services each year for reliable, long-distance travel without the premium price tag of rail.
The core offering revolves around point-to-point coach journeys, with airport transfers to hubs like Heathrow and Stansted proving particularly popular. Fares are highly competitive; we frequently see one-way tickets between major cities like London and Bristol dropping below the £5 mark. Unlike the rail network, where you might end up standing in a vestibule, every coach booking guarantees you a proper seat.
Beyond the basics, the operator packs in several practical features to improve the ride. You get free onboard WiFi and power sockets at every seat, which is brilliant for working on the go. If you travel regularly, picking up a Coachcard for £15 knocks a third off standard fares all year round. They are also actively modernising their fleet, with a stated goal to run entirely zero-emission coaches by 2035.
When you stack these already low base fares with a discount code from our list below, you are looking at some of the cheapest intercity travel available in the UK.
How to use
Shopping Guide
When is the cheapest time to book a coach?
Unlike airlines that hike prices as the departure date nears, coach fares tend to remain relatively stable, but the real savings come from travelling off-peak. We have noticed that Tuesday and Wednesday departures, particularly mid-morning or late evening, consistently offer the lowest base rates. If you are heading to an airport, avoid the Friday evening rush; shifting your transfer to early Saturday morning can easily halve your fare.
Which ticket type should I choose to avoid hidden fees?
National Express offers three main tiers: Restricted, Standard, and Fully Flexible. Restricted tickets are the cheapest but lock you in completely. If there is even a slight chance your plans might change, pay the small premium for a Standard ticket. It only costs a £5 amendment fee to swap your journey later, whereas upgrading to a Fully Flexible ticket after booking a Restricted one is impossible and forces you to buy a brand-new fare.
Is a Coachcard actually worth buying?
If you fall into the Young Persons (16-26), Senior, or Disabled categories, absolutely. The card costs £15 but slashes a third off all Standard and Fully Flexible fares for a year. Based on our tracking, you only need to make two or three return trips to major cities or airports to recoup the initial outlay. Just remember to enter your Coachcard number during the booking process, or the system will charge you the full adult rate.
